Spring 2010 Community Gardening/ Urban Farming Intern

Location: In and around the SE Como neighborhood: Mostly at SECIA's offices & at the neighborhood community gardens

Description:
SECIA neighborhood organization supports a number of award winning
community gardens of all kinds; food production, native plant and
beautification gardens.  This internship will have a dual role in
support of all our gardening projects and will help launch a new
containerized vegetable gardening project targeted to resident
renters.  The position requires creative thinking, ability to write and
utilize internet tools, and working independently.

The role of this intern is to

  • Participate in as many community gardening dates as possible, up to 9 garden events per month (about 50 hours)
  • Market
the community gardens to other students and neighbors (updating
websites and calendars, potentially flyering, canvassing or event
    tabling), (8 hours)
  • Support spring outreach events such as a BU Day/Earth week event & the Community Garden Resource Fair on March 27th, 2010. (15 hours)
  • Assist in the design, creation and unveiling of SECIA's containerized vegetable garden project, (about 100 hours)
    • including building containers using reused materials and power tools,
    • organizing participants,
    • distributing materials, and
    • contributing to the technical support we provide participants.
  • Other tasks as determined.

Interns
will take home new knowledge on how to grow-your-own, and have a the
opportunity to stay on as a regular SE Como community gardener for the
whole summer. SECIA take pride in our efforts to incorporate students
into the
neighborhood's initiatives.  Many past Service Learners stay connected
to SECIA after their terms and others earn letters of recommendation.

Position Schedule:
Early in the term, Interns will have computer related tasks and attend
meetings. Once weather allows, we will start workdays at all of the
community gardens.  Flexible schedule is best, with garden times
typically happening on some
Tuesday or Wednesday evenings, and weekends (Saturday & Sunday
mornings). A weekly office time during business hours will also be
arranged per candidate's schedule.

Requirements:
Candidates with some gardening knowledge are preferred.  Also preferred
are candidates comfortable building with power tools.    Physical labor
is involved in this position such as  digging, planting seeds, and
hauling in  various types of weather. We expect interns to be reliable,
and prefer an enthusiasm to acquire skills.
